“বঙ্গোপসাগরের প্লাস্টিক দূষণঃ সামুদ্রিক জীবের সর্বকালীন শত্রু”

সাম্প্রতিক একটি গবেষণা থেকে উঠে এসেছে যে, প্রতি বছর প্রায় ২ লক্ষ টন প্লাস্টিক-বর্জ্য বঙ্গোপসাগরে এসে পতিত হচ্ছে। অনেক সামুদ্রিক জীব যেমন: সিল, তিমি, ডলফিন, সামুদ্রিক পাখি, বিভিন্ন মাছ, কাঁকড়া ইত্যাদি পানিতে মিশে থাকা এসব প্লাস্টিকের ক্ষুদ্র কণাসমূহ খাদ্য হিসেবে গ্রহণ করে যা সেসব জীবের অসুস্থতা এমনকি মৃত্যুর জন্যও দায়ী। এছাড়াও প্লাস্টিকের সাথে মিশে থাকা বিষাক্ত রাসায়নিক উপাদানসমূহ পানির সাথে মিশে নদী প্রবাহের মাধ্যমে সারা দেশে পানি দূষণ সৃষ্টি করে।
এর ফলস্বরূপ বিলুপ্তির পথে ১১৮ টি দেশীয় প্রজাতির বিভিন্ন সামুদ্রিক ও মিঠা পানির মাছ। এই তালিকার অন্তর্ভুক্ত রয়েছে – ‘পাঙ্গাস’, ‘কালা বাটা’, ‘কচুয়া পুটি’, ‘চিতল’, ‘টেংরা’ ইত্যাদি । এতে শুধু আমাদের বাস্তুতন্ত্রই নয়, বরং অর্থনীতিও ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হচ্ছে। জনস্বাস্থ্যের ক্ষতি, সুপেয় জলের অভাব এবং জলবাহিত রোগের বৃদ্ধিও সবই এই দূষণের পরিণতি।
এই পরিস্থিতির জন্য মূলত বিশাল জনসংখ্যার চাপ, দূর্বল বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনা এবং আইন প্রয়োগের অভাবই দায়ী। তবে, স্বাস্থ্যকর বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনার কৌশল অনুসরণ করার মাধ্যমে বঙ্গোপসাগরের প্লাস্টিক দূষণের মাত্রা কমিয়ে সমুদ্র ও সামুদ্রিক জীবের স্বাভাবিক অবস্থা ফিরিয়ে আনা সম্ভব হবে।

“Plastic Pollution in the Bay of Bengal: The Eternal Enemy of Marine life”
A recent study shows that every year about 2 lakh tons of plastic wastages are found in the depth of the Bay of Bengal. Tiny particles of plastic wastages are consumed by the seals, whales, dolphins, seabirds, fish, crabs, and many other animals leading them towards sickness to death. Moreover, toxic chemicals contained by the plastic wastages get released into the water and end up causing water pollution all over the country with the flows of rivers.

This has caused 118 indigenous species of both sea-fish and freshwater fish to be endangered. This list includes – ‘Pangas’, ‘Kala Bata’, ‘Kachua Puty’, ‘Chital’, ‘ Tengra’ etc. This verge of extinction has caused a huge impact on not only our ecosystem but also the economy. Public health hazards, lack of mineral water, and the increase in water-borne diseases are also the consequences of the pollution.
In this situation, huge population pressure, poor waste management, and lack of enforcement of laws are to blame. However, practicing a healthy waste management system can be an initial step toward the end of the era of plastic pollution in the Bay of Bengal.
